What Is Round-the-World Service Day?

Every March 6th is "Round-the-World Service Day" (世界一周記念日, Sekai Isshū Kinenbi) in Japan. On March 6, 1967, Japan Airlines (JAL) launched its world circumnavigation route — completing Japan's connectivity to the entire globe through a single continuous air route that circled the Earth. Before this service, travelers who wanted to circumnavigate the globe by air had to piece together separate routes on different carriers. JAL's 1967 world route was both a commercial achievement and a symbolic statement: Japan was now connected to the world in its entirety.

JAL's world circumnavigation service launched in 1967 operated eastward from Tokyo through the United States and onward to Europe and back to Japan — or westward in the reverse direction. The route combined JAL's established transpacific service (inaugurated in 1960, connecting Tokyo and San Francisco) with its transatlantic expansion. The completion of a true round-the-world route — allowing a passenger to purchase a ticket and circle the globe on one carrier — was a milestone in Japanese aviation history and in Japan's postwar integration into the global economy.

The 1967 world route launch came during a period of rapid expansion in Japan's civil aviation, fueled by the country's postwar economic miracle and its growing role in global trade. The concept of a single airline's "world route" has evolved into global airline alliances (Star Alliance, Oneworld, SkyTeam) that allow passengers to circle the globe on coordinated networks of partner carriers.
