What Is Japan Overseas Cooperation Volunteers Day?

Every April 20th is "Japan Overseas Cooperation Volunteers Day" (青年海外協力隊の日, Seinen Kaigai Kyōryoku-tai no Hi) in Japan. On April 20, 1965, the Japan Overseas Cooperation Volunteers (JOCV, 青年海外協力隊) organization was officially established by the Japanese government — creating Japan's version of the Peace Corps and initiating a program that has sent tens of thousands of Japanese volunteers to developing countries worldwide over the following six decades.
