What Is Tokyo Port Opening Day?

Every May 20th is "Tokyo Port Opening Day" (東京港開港記念日, Tōkyō-kō Kaikō Kinenbi) in Japan. On May 20, 1941, Tokyo Port (東京港) was officially designated as an international trade port — allowing direct foreign trade through Tokyo for the first time. Before this designation, Tokyo's trade was conducted through Yokohama Port (which had been open for international trade since 1859). The 1941 designation gave Tokyo its own direct international port infrastructure, though the timing — just months before Japan's entry into WWII in December 1941 — meant the new international port's commercial potential was initially unrealized.

Tokyo Port's Development

Tokyo Port's physical development — extending into Tokyo Bay through a series of land reclamation projects that began in the early 20th century and continue today — has created the artificial islands and waterfront areas that define much of Tokyo's southern coastline. The port area encompasses cargo terminals, container facilities, and the Odaiba waterfront development zone (お台場) that became one of Tokyo's major commercial and entertainment districts in the 1990s.

Tokyo Port is one of Japan's busiest ports by cargo value, handling imports of food products, electronics components, automobiles, and consumer goods that supply the world's largest metropolitan area. Tokyo Bay has been progressively transformed by land reclamation over centuries — the original coastline of Edo lay considerably further inland than today's waterfront. Modern land reclamation has created entire new districts including Odaiba, Tatsumi, and the areas around Haneda Airport. This ongoing reshaping of the bay reflects Tokyo's characteristic approach to urban expansion: building outward into the water when expansion on land becomes impossible.
