The Origins of Streetcar Day

Streetcar Day was established on June 10, 1995, at the 2nd Streetcar Summit held in Hiroshima, by streetcar operators and support groups from around Japan. It was registered with the Japan Anniversary Association in 2023 as a day established by the National Council of Streetcar Operators (全国路面軌道連絡協議会), made up of streetcar operators nationwide. With cars becoming more dominant — to the point that some cities discontinued their streetcar lines entirely — there was a renewed push to reevaluate streetcars as a relatively low-impact form of urban transportation that still has an important role to play.

What Are Streetcars?

Streetcars are a type of rail vehicle that runs on tracks embedded in city streets. In Japan, the first streetcar began running in Kyoto in 1895 (Meiji 28), and streetcars went on to become a familiar means of transportation for city residents across the country. Today, streetcars still operate in cities including Sapporo, Hakodate, Tokyo (the Toden Arakawa Line), Toyama, Toyohashi, Kyoto, Okayama, Hiroshima, Matsuyama, Kochi, Nagasaki, Kumamoto, and Kagoshima.
