What Is Akita Prefecture Day?

Every August 29th is "Akita Prefecture Day" (秋田県の記念日, Akita-ken no Kinenbi) in Japan. On August 29, 1871, in the sweeping administrative reform known as the "Abolition of Domains and Establishment of Prefectures" (廃藩置県, haihan chiken), the name "Akita Prefecture" (秋田県) was formally established — creating the prefecture as an administrative unit of the new Meiji state in place of the complex overlapping feudal domains of the Edo period. Akita Prefecture celebrates this anniversary as the founding date of its modern administrative identity.

The Haihan Chiken of 1871

The haihan chiken (廃藩置県, "abolition of domains and establishment of prefectures") of July 1871 was one of the most radical administrative reforms in Japanese history — eliminating overnight the approximately 270 feudal domains (藩, han) that had governed Japan under the Tokugawa system and replacing them with a uniform system of prefectures (府県, fuken) under the direct authority of the new Meiji central government. Former domain lords were required to move to Tokyo; their retainers lost their hereditary status; and Japan's fractured feudal geography was consolidated into a unified administrative state for the first time. The reform was implemented in a single day and met with remarkably little resistance.

Akita Prefecture and Its Heritage

Akita Prefecture (秋田県) in the Tōhoku region of northern Honshu is known for its distinctive cultural heritage: Akita Bijin (秋田美人, "Akita beauties" — the regional reputation for beautiful women, attributed to the area's cold climate and pure water), Akita Komachi rice (あきたこまち, one of Japan's most popular rice varieties), Namahage (なまはげ, the traditional New Year demon ritual that was designated UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2018), and the Akita dog (秋田犬) — the large, dignified breed immortalized internationally by Hachikō.

Japan's Prefectural System

The prefectural system created by the 1871 haihan chiken — initially over 300 units, consolidated to 47 prefectures by 1889 — remains the basic framework of Japanese regional government today, with minimal changes to boundaries or numbers since the Meiji era. Each of Japan's 47 prefectures celebrates its own founding anniversary.

Fun Facts

• Namahage UNESCO recognition: Akita's Namahage ritual — in which men dressed as fearsome demons (namahage) visit households on New Year's Eve to frighten children into good behavior — was inscribed on the UNESCO Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2018 as part of the "Raiho-shin" (来訪神, visiting deities) ritual group.
