What Is Railway Day?

Every October 14th is "Railway Day" (鉄道の日, Tetsudō no Hi) in Japan. On October 14, 1872, Japan's first railway opened for public service — connecting Shimbashi (新橋) in Tokyo with Yokohama (横浜) over a distance of 29 kilometers, with a journey time of approximately 53 minutes. The line, built with British technical assistance and using British rolling stock, marked Japan's entry into the railway age and the beginning of the transportation revolution that would transform Japanese society, economy, and geography over the following century and a half.

Japan's First Railway

The October 14, 1872 opening ceremony was attended by Emperor Meiji — a symbolic endorsement of the new technology by Japan's modernizing imperial government. The railway was an engineering marvel by the standards of the era: iron rails laid on wooden sleepers, steam locomotives imported from Britain, and passenger carriages offering different classes of accommodation. Early ridership was modest but grew rapidly as Japanese people discovered the convenience of steam-powered travel and as the network expanded outward from Tokyo and Yokohama.

Railway Week and Railway Day Events

Railway Day is the centerpiece of "Railway Week" (鉄道の週, October 14-20), during which Japan's railways hold events celebrating their history and current operations: station tours, driver cab visits, retired locomotive exhibitions, model railway displays, and commemorative stamp sales. The day attracts Japan's large community of "tetsudō mania" (鉄道マニア, railway enthusiasts) as well as families with children fascinated by trains.

From the 1872 Shimbashi-Yokohama line, Japan has built one of the world's most extensive and sophisticated railway networks — the Shinkansen, metropolitan subway systems, private commuter railways, and rural regional lines that together constitute the infrastructure of Japanese mobility. Japan's railway technology, customer service standards, and operational precision are internationally recognized as world-leading, and Japanese companies have exported railway technology to Taiwan (Shinkansen), UK (rolling stock), and numerous other countries.
