What Is Skilled Crafts Day?

Every November 10th is "Skilled Crafts Day" (技能の日, Ginō no Hi) in Japan. The day commemorates November 10, 1970, when the first "Skills Olympics" competition in Japan was held — a national competition of vocational and technical skills that became the foundation of Japan's skills competition culture. Skills Day celebrates the value of technical mastery, vocational excellence, and the skilled craftsmen and women whose expertise underlies Japan's manufacturing quality and traditional crafts heritage.

The Skills Olympics

The International Vocational Skills Competition (技能五輪国際大会, Ginō Gorin Kokusai Taikai) — known internationally as WorldSkills — is a competition in which young skilled workers from countries around the world compete in approximately 50 vocational categories, from carpentry and welding to IT networking and cooking. Japan has participated since 1962 and has consistently been one of the world's strongest-performing nations in these competitions, regularly placing in the top rankings of the overall medal table. Japan's skill competition success reflects the emphasis on technical excellence embedded in Japanese manufacturing and vocational culture.

Japan's Skills Transmission System

Japan has developed extensive systems for preserving and transmitting skilled craftsmanship. The "Master of Traditional Crafts" (伝統的工芸品産業振興協会) system recognizes designated traditional craft industries; the "Contemporary Master Craftsman" (現代の名工, Gendai no Meikō) award annually recognizes individual craftspeople of outstanding skill; and the Agency for Cultural Affairs' "Living National Treasure" (人間国宝, Ningen Kokuhō) system honors masters of traditional performing arts and crafts at the highest level. These systems reflect Japan's understanding that skilled knowledge is irreplaceable cultural heritage.

Skills in Japan's Manufacturing Culture

Japan's renowned manufacturing quality — Toyota Production System, kaizen (改善, continuous improvement), monozukuri (ものづくり, the spirit of making things) — rests on a foundation of skilled workers whose technical expertise is developed through years of practice and mentorship. Skilled Crafts Day honors this foundation and promotes careers in skilled trades to younger generations who might otherwise prioritize white-collar professional paths.

• Living National Treasures: Japan's "Living National Treasure" (人間国宝) designation — officially "Holder of Important Intangible Cultural Property" — is awarded to masters of traditional arts including Noh theater, pottery, lacquerwork, textile dyeing, and other traditional crafts. The government supports these individuals with stipends to enable them to continue their practice and transmit their knowledge.
• WorldSkills results: At the 2022 WorldSkills Competition, Japan won 7 gold, 4 silver, and 2 bronze medals — placing among the top countries globally in technical skill competition, demonstrating the strength of Japan's vocational training culture.
