What Is Kobe Port Opening Day?

Every December 7th is "Kobe Port Opening Day" (神戸開港記念日, Kōbe Kaikō Kinenbi) in Japan. On December 7, 1867 (by the old lunar calendar — corresponding to January 1, 1868 in the Gregorian calendar), Kobe Port opened to foreign ships and international trade. The anniversary was established by the City of Kobe. The opening made Kobe one of Japan's designated treaty ports and launched the city's transformation into one of Japan's most cosmopolitan international ports — a city where foreign merchants, diplomats, and missionaries built Western-style buildings and created an international community that gave Kobe its distinctive character.

Kobe's International Heritage

The foreign settlement (居留地, kyoryūchi) established in Kobe after the port's 1868 opening became one of Japan's most vibrant international communities. Foreign merchants built trading houses in the settlement and, later, residences in the Kitano area on the hillside above the port — creating the Western-style mansions (北野異人館街, Kitano ijinkan-gai) that still attract tourists today. Kobe's international character profoundly shaped its culture: foreign residents' demand for beef helped local Tajima cattle gain fame as "Kobe beef," and Western-style bakeries, confectionery, and numerous other cultural imports took root that first reached Japan through its cosmopolitan port.

Kobe as Japan's Premier Port

For much of the 20th century, Kobe ranked among Japan's leading international trade ports, thanks to its deep-water facilities and strategic location on Osaka Bay, and in its heyday it handled one of the largest container volumes in the world. The city's port, container terminals, and associated logistics infrastructure made it the hub of Japan's maritime commerce and a major global shipping node. The 1995 Great Hanshin Earthquake severely damaged the port facilities, but they were rebuilt with remarkable speed and Kobe remains a major port city.
