What Is Invention Day?

Every April 18th is "Invention Day" (発明の日, Hatsumei no Hi) in Japan. On April 18, 1885, Japan's first patent law — the Senbai Tokkyo Jōrei (専売特許条例, "Monopoly Patent Ordinance") — was promulgated, establishing Japan's first formal system for protecting intellectual property and encouraging innovation. The day was formally designated as Invention Day by the then-Ministry of International Trade and Industry (MITI, now METI) in 1954, to promote public understanding of intellectual property and to celebrate the spirit of invention.

Japan's Patent System: From 1885 to Today

The 1885 Senbai Tokkyo Jōrei was modeled on Western patent systems and was part of the Meiji government's broader project of adopting European legal institutions. Japan's first patent examiner, Korekiyo Takahashi (who later became Prime Minister), traveled to the United States and Europe to study their patent systems before designing Japan's own. The very first Japanese patent — Patent No. 1 — was issued to Hotta Zuishō for a rust-preventing paint on July 1, 1885.

Japan as an Innovation Powerhouse

Over the following century, Japan developed into one of the world's most prolific sources of patents and inventions. Japanese companies and researchers have pioneered innovations across electronics (the transistor radio, the Walkman, the CD, the Blu-ray disc), automotive engineering (fuel injection, hybrid technology, airbag systems), medical devices, robotics, and materials science. Japan consistently ranks among the top three countries in the world by number of patent applications filed annually.

Celebrating Invention Week

Around Invention Day, Japan observes "Invention Week" (発明週間), during which the Japan Patent Office, schools, and industry associations hold events to encourage young people to develop their creativity and interest in science and technology. Invention contests for students are organized nationally, with winning inventions sometimes going on to commercial development.

Fun Facts About Japanese Inventions

• Instant noodles: One of the world's most consequential food inventions — instant ramen — was created by Momofuku Ando of Nissin Foods in 1958. His Cup Noodles (1971) became a global product.
• The fax machine: While the fax principle was American, Japan popularized and refined fax technology for office use, and Japanese businesses maintained fax culture long after most countries shifted to email.
• Blue LEDs: Japanese scientists Isamu Akasaki, Hiroshi Amano, and Shuji Nakamura won the 2014 Nobel Prize in Physics for inventing the blue LED, which completed the color triad needed for white LED lighting — one of the most energy-efficient light sources ever developed.
