What Is Nenbutsu no Kuchidome?

December 16th is regarded as "Nenbutsu no Kuchidome" (literally, "silencing the nenbutsu chant"). This is a traditional Japanese folk custom: during Obon (the summer festival honoring ancestral spirits, held around July or August depending on the region), families chant Buddhist prayers (nenbutsu) for their departed ancestors, and on this day in December, that chanting is formally brought to a pause for the year. While the timing and name of this custom vary by region, it generally marks a year-end milestone—the conclusion of ancestor veneration and Buddhist observances for the year.

What Is "Nenbutsu"?

"Nenbutsu" refers to a Buddhist practice of holding the Buddha in one's heart and chanting his name aloud. In the Jodo and Jodo Shinshu schools, the phrase "Namu Amida Butsu" is chanted, while in Nichiren Buddhism, the equivalent is "Namu Myoho Renge Kyo." The nenbutsu, popularized by influential monks such as Honen, Shinran, and Nichiren, spread widely among ordinary people as a teaching of salvation accessible to anyone—"simply chant, and you will be saved"—without requiring difficult scholarly study.
