Every May 10th is "Geology Day" (地質の日, Chishitsu no Hi) in Japan. The date commemorates two events: on May 10, 1876, American geologist Benjamin Smith Lyman and his colleagues completed the "Geological Map of Northern Japan" (日本北辺地質図) — the first comprehensive geological map of any part of Japan. Additionally, on the same date in 1878, the Geological Society of Japan (地質学会) was founded. Established in 2007 by a consortium of geology-related organizations, Geology Day promotes public awareness of Japan's geological heritage and the practical importance of earth science.
Benjamin Smith Lyman and Japan's First Geological Map
Benjamin Smith Lyman was an American mining engineer and geologist hired by the Meiji government to survey Hokkaido's natural resources, particularly coal deposits. His systematic geological survey of Hokkaido — conducted between 1872 and 1875 — produced the first scientifically rigorous geological map of any Japanese territory, revealing the distribution of coal seams, mineral deposits, and geological formations that would fuel Japan's industrial revolution. Lyman's work was a model of the international scientific collaboration that characterized the Meiji era's rapid modernization.

Geological surveys have also identified significant deposits of polymetallic sulfides on the seafloor around Japan, pointing to potential future deep-sea mineral resources.
