On November 9, 1989, after the East German government announced that citizens would be allowed to travel freely, crowds of Berliners surged toward the wall that divided East and West Berlin, and the Berlin Wall came down. What Was the Berlin Wall?

Construction of the Berlin Wall began on August 13, 1961. East Germany (the German Democratic Republic) built this concrete wall to stop the flow of its population to West Berlin. Over the 28 years it stood, more than 140 people are believed to have died attempting to cross it.

When this was broadcast on radio and television, tens of thousands of East Berliners flocked to border checkpoints. Overwhelmed, the border guards opened the gates, and crowds began joyfully chipping away at the wall with hammers.
