What Is Hot Air Balloon Day?

Every June 5th is "Hot Air Balloon Day" (熱気球記念日, Netsukikyū Kinenbi) in Japan. The day marks the first public demonstration of a hot air balloon by brothers Joseph-Michel and Jacques-Étienne Montgolfier in Annonay, France, in June 1783 (many sources outside Japan date the demonstration to June 4th). The unmanned balloon is estimated to have risen to 1,600-2,000 meters. This achievement — making humans dream that free flight through the atmosphere was possible — inaugurated the history of aviation and led directly to the first manned balloon flights later that year.

The Montgolfier Balloon: Flight's First Chapter

The Montgolfier brothers — papermakers from Annonay — developed their balloon after observing that smoke and hot air caused lightweight materials to rise. Their June 1783 demonstration used an envelope of fabric and paper filled with hot air from a fire below its opening. The balloon flew for about 10 minutes and traveled approximately 2 kilometers before descending. The achievement astonished the observers and immediately captured the imagination of scientists and adventurers across Europe.

Hot Air Ballooning in Japan

Modern hot air ballooning, using nylon envelopes and propane burners, developed in the 1960s and has since become a sport and tourism activity in Japan as well. Japan hosts competitions and regional festivals, and the "Saga International Balloon Fiesta" (佐賀インターナショナルバルーンフェスタ) held each autumn in Saga Prefecture -- one of the largest balloon events in Asia -- brings around 100 balloons from Japan and abroad and draws large crowds.

Fun Facts

• First animal passengers: On September 19, 1783, a balloon carrying a sheep, a duck, and a rooster was flown at Versailles before King Louis XVI and Queen Marie Antoinette.
• First human flight: The first untethered manned hot air balloon flight took place on November 21, 1783, when Pilâtre de Rozier and the Marquis d'Arlandes flew a Montgolfier balloon about 9 kilometers over Paris in roughly 25 minutes.
• Tethered balloons in Japan: Japan has used tethered hot air balloons (係留気球, keiryū kikyū) as observation platforms for advertising and events — a practical application of balloon technology that provides aerial views without the need for full free-flight operations.
