What Is Healthy Heart Day?

August 10th is Healthy Heart Day (健康ハートの日, Kenkō Hāto no Hi) in Japan. The date is a wordplay: 8 (hā) + 10 (to) = "hāto" = ハート (heart). The day was established by the Japan Heart Foundation (公益財団法人 日本心臓財団) to raise public awareness of heart disease prevention and the importance of cardiovascular health through education and community outreach activities centred on August 10th each year.

Understanding Heart Disease

Heart disease (cardiac disease) is the second leading cause of death in Japan, after cancer — and one of the leading causes of death worldwide.

  • Coronary artery disease (angina and heart attack): Caused by the narrowing or blockage of the coronary arteries — the vessels that supply blood to the heart muscle — typically due to atherosclerosis. Symptoms include severe chest pain. A heart attack (myocardial infarction) can be fatal and requires immediate treatment.
  • Heart failure: A condition in which the heart's pumping function deteriorates, leaving it unable to supply enough blood to the body. Key symptoms are breathlessness, swelling in the limbs, and fatigue.
  • Arrhythmia: An abnormality in the electrical signals that regulate the heart's rhythm. Symptoms range from palpitations and dizziness to fainting. Severe cases can lead to sudden cardiac death.

Key Facts for Protecting Your Heart

  • Major risk factors: High blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, obesity, smoking, physical inactivity, and chronic stress are the primary risk factors for heart disease — and most can be significantly reduced through lifestyle change.
  • Atherosclerosis: the silent buildup: Atherosclerosis — the gradual hardening and narrowing of arteries due to the accumulation of LDL ("bad") cholesterol in artery walls — progresses without symptoms for years. By the time it causes a problem, the damage may already be severe.
  • AEDs save lives: The brain begins to suffer irreversible damage within 4–6 minutes of cardiac arrest. An AED (Automated External Defibrillator), used promptly, can dramatically increase survival rates. Japan has over 800,000 AEDs installed in schools, stations, and public buildings — one of the densest AED networks in the world.

Fascinating Facts About Healthy Heart Day

  • Your heart's astonishing output: The adult heart beats approximately 100,000 times a day, pumping around 7,000 litres of blood. Over a lifetime, that amounts to enough blood to circle the Earth roughly 25 times.
  • Heart Rate Variability (HRV): The tiny variations in the timing between heartbeats — known as heart rate variability (HRV) — reflect the state of the autonomic nervous system, stress levels, and recovery capacity. HRV monitoring is widely used in sports medicine and personal health tracking.
  • When heartbreak is medical: Intense emotional shock — grief, extreme stress, the end of a relationship — can trigger a real cardiac condition called takotsubo cardiomyopathy (broken heart syndrome), in which the heart's pumping function temporarily weakens. It is not just a metaphor.
  • World Heart Day (September 29th): Designated by the World Heart Federation and WHO, World Heart Day is observed globally on September 29th. Japan's August 10th Healthy Heart Day is a domestic observance with a focus on accessible, everyday health education.
  • Heart-healthy foods: Oily fish (rich in EPA and DHA), nuts (unsaturated fats), vegetables and fruit (antioxidants), and wholegrains (dietary fibre) are consistently associated with reduced cardiovascular disease risk.

Tips for Marking This Day

  • Locate the nearest AED to your home, workplace, and commute route — and look up how to use one. Knowing where it is and what to do could save a life.
  • Take your blood pressure, check your weight, and measure your waist circumference. Make August 10th your annual "heart health check" day.
  • Cook a meal featuring oily fish — mackerel, sardines, or saury — and consciously give your heart the EPA and DHA it needs.
  • Choose the stairs over the lift today. Small, consistent elevations in heart rate through everyday activity are one of the simplest and most evidence-based ways to support cardiovascular health.

Right Now, Your Heart Is Beating for You

August 10th is a day to feel grateful for the heart that beats in your chest without rest — and to do something, however small, to look after it. Your heart is your most faithful companion: it has been working for you every second of your life, and it asks for so little in return. Today, place your hand on your chest, feel that steady rhythm, and commit to one small act of care. Your heart has been keeping its promise to you. Today, keep yours to it.
