What Is Häagen-Dazs Day?
August 10th is "Häagen-Dazs Day" in Japan, established by Häagen-Dazs Japan and registered with the Japan Anniversary Association in 2017. The date comes from the company's founding date, August 10, 1984. The aim is to have even more people enjoy Häagen-Dazs ice cream.
An Ice Cream Brand's Holiday, Rooted in Its Founding Day
Häagen-Dazs is a globally renowned premium ice cream brand known for its carefully selected ingredients and distinctive production method.
- Origin: marks the founding date of Häagen-Dazs Japan (August 10, 1984)
- A link to "Heart Day": August 10th is also known in Japan as "Heart Day" (ha (8) - to (10)), and the company had been promoting the "Häagen Heart" -- the heart-shaped dent you see when you open a mini cup -- which reportedly played a part in choosing the date
- Commemorative events: to mark the establishment of the day in 2017, "Häagen Shave," a shaved ice made with the ice cream, was given away free at a limited-time shop in Gaienmae, Tokyo
The Story Behind the Name "Häagen-Dazs"
Häagen-Dazs was founded in 1960 in the Bronx, New York, by Polish-born immigrant Reuben Mattus and his wife Rose. The name is not a real word -- it is said to be an invented name combining "hagen" from Copenhagen, the capital of dairy-rich Denmark, with "dazs," chosen to match the sound. To add a European, premium feel, an umlaut "ä" that does not exist in the original spelling was added on purpose.
In Japan, the Japanese company was established in 1984, and the first shop opened in Aoyama, Tokyo, the same year.
