What Is World Cotton Day?

October 7th is World Cotton Day, first celebrated on October 7, 2019, at the WTO (World Trade Organization) in Geneva, Switzerland, at the proposal of four West African cotton-producing nations — Benin, Burkina Faso, Chad, and Mali (the "Cotton Four"). In August 2021, the UN General Assembly proclaimed October 7th as World Cotton Day, making it an official UN international day to raise awareness of cotton's vital role in trade, agriculture, and development.

Cotton: A Plant That Changed the World

Cotton cultivation is said to date back about 7,000 years to the Indian subcontinent. It spread across the Middle East, Africa, and the Americas, and during the Industrial Revolution, cotton textiles drove the emergence of modern manufacturing economies.
