What Is Lighter Day?
November 11th is "Lighter Day" in Japan. The date comes from the way a row of standard slender lighters resembles "11 11." It was established by the Japan Smoking Articles Corporate Association, an industry group for lighters, pipes, and other smoking goods (renamed JSACA in June 2025).

Lighters became widely used as an alternative to matches, serving not only as smoking accessories but also as useful tools for camping and disaster preparedness.

The association has also maintained its own "Cigarette Lighter Safety Standard" since 1982.
