Disposable Warmer Day

What Is Disposable Warmer Day?

December 1st is "Disposable Warmer Day" in Japan, marking the first day of December, when demand for disposable body warmers rises. It was established in 1991 by the Japan Disposable Body Warmer Manufacturers Association.

A Holiday Chosen for the Start of Serious Winter Cold

Disposable body warmers, which provide instant warmth the moment you open the package, are an essential item for surviving Japan's cold winters.

• Origin: the first day of December, when demand for warmers rises alongside the arrival of serious winter cold, was chosen as the holiday
• Purpose: to spread awareness of the convenience of disposable warmers and how to use them properly
• How they work: iron powder reacts with oxygen in the air, generating heat through oxidation

A Cold-Weather Item Commercialized in Japan

Disposable body warmers were commercialized in Japan, drawing on earlier designs such as U.S. military foot warmers. They are said to have spread widely after Lotte Denshi Kogyo launched "Hokaron" nationwide in 1978, and they are now used overseas as well. Varieties have since been developed for different needs, including stick-on types and shoe warmers.

Tips for Marking This Day

• Stock up on warmers for the winter ahead
• Review the proper way to use warmers and safety precautions
• Reconsider your cold-weather preparations for going outside
• Look into how warmers generate heat

A Small Packet Protects the Body From Winter's Cold

A tiny warmer tucked into a pocket delivers gentle warmth through the harshest cold. December 1st is a day to give thanks for this winter companion.
