What Is Cinema Day?

Every December 1st is "Cinema Day" (映画の日, Eiga no Hi) in Japan. On December 1, 1896, the Lumière Brothers' Cinématographe — the world's first projected motion picture system — was publicly screened in Japan for the first time, at the Kobe Club (神戸倶楽部) in Kobe. The screening, just one year after the Lumières had unveiled their invention in Paris, demonstrated the extraordinary speed with which Japan was absorbing new Western technologies in the Meiji era. Cinema Day was established by the Motion Picture Producers Association of Japan (映画産業団体連合会) in 1956 to mark this anniversary.

Cinema Arrives in Japan

The December 1, 1896 Kobe screening was followed within months by screenings in Tokyo, Osaka, and other major cities. The new medium attracted enormous popular interest — "moving pictures" were a sensation to audiences who had never seen anything like them. By the early 1900s, purpose-built movie theaters had appeared in Japan's cities, and a domestic film industry was beginning to emerge. Japan's first domestically produced films appeared around 1898-1899, initially short documentary recordings of theatrical performances.

Japan's Film Industry

Japan developed one of the world's most distinctive national cinema traditions. Directors including Yasujiro Ozu, Akira Kurosawa, Kenji Mizoguchi, and Mikio Naruse created works that are recognized as masterpieces of world cinema. Kurosawa's "Rashomon" (1950) won the Venice Golden Lion and opened Western audiences to Japanese film; "Seven Samurai" (1954) and "Ikiru" (1952) remain among the most studied films in cinematic history. Contemporary directors like Hayao Miyazaki (Studio Ghibli) and Hirokazu Kore-eda have extended Japan's international cinematic reputation.

In contemporary Japan, December 1st is observed by the film industry as a day of discounted admission prices — major cinema chains typically offer tickets at reduced prices to encourage attendance and celebrate the medium. The tradition of Cinema Day discounts has made December 1st one of the busiest cinema attendance days of the year.
