What Is Quiz Day?

September 12th is "Quiz Day" in Japan. It was established by Cubic Inc. of Shibuya, Tokyo, known as Japan's first "general trading company for quizzes," which provides quiz questions and plans and runs quiz events. The day was certified and registered by the Japan Anniversary Association in 2021.

A Date Built from a Wordplay on "Quiz"

Quiz Day comes from a playful reading of the date and celebrates the intellectual joy that quizzes bring to people's lives.

• Origin: The date comes from a Japanese wordplay in which "9-1-2" can be read as "ku-i-zu," sounding like the word "quiz"
• Established by: Cubic Inc., which provides quiz content and runs quiz events (certified in 2021)
• Purpose: To help more people discover how appealing, fun and deep quizzes can be. The company holds quiz contests and other events around this day

Quizzes: Where Learning Meets Entertainment

Quizzes now appear not only on TV, radio, and in newspapers and magazines, but also on websites, apps, digital signage and even car navigation systems. Cubic defines a quiz as "any content made up of a question and an answer," and works on all kinds of Q&A, from puzzles and riddles to certification tests.

Incidentally, some sources list January 9 as "Tonchi Day / Quiz Day," a wordplay on Ikkyu-san, the famously witty monk (1-9 read as "ik-kyu"), though who established it is unclear.
