What Is Hydrographic Survey Day?

Every September 12th is "Hydrographic Survey Day" (水路記念日, Suiro Kinenbi) in Japan. On September 12, 1871, Japan established its first modern hydrographic survey organization — the "Suirokyoku" (水路局, Hydrographic Bureau) within the Army Ministry (later transferred to the Navy Ministry) — marking the beginning of Japan's systematic scientific surveying of its coastal waters, ports, and maritime approaches. The Hydrographic and Oceanographic Department of the Japan Coast Guard, the Suirokyoku's modern successor, continues this work today.
