What Is Tottori Prefectural Citizens' Day?
September 12th is "Tottori Prefectural Citizens' Day" (Tottori Kenmin no Hi), commemorating the day in 1881 (Meiji 14) when present-day Tottori Prefecture was established. Tottori Prefecture designated the day in 1998.
The Day Tottori Prefecture Was Reborn
Tottori Prefectural Citizens' Day looks back on the prefecture's historical origins and encourages residents to take pride in their hometown.
- Historical background: On August 21, 1876 (Meiji 9), Tottori was merged into Shimane Prefecture and ceased to exist as a separate prefecture. Because the merger was sudden, a movement to restore Tottori soon grew
- Re-establishment: About five years later, on September 12, 1881, the eight districts of former Inaba Province and six districts of former Hōki Province were separated from Shimane and Tottori Prefecture was re-established, giving rise to the Tottori Prefecture that exists today
- Designation: To commemorate this historic event, Tottori Prefecture designated the day as "Tottori Prefectural Citizens' Day" by ordinance in 1998
- Purpose: According to the ordinance, to deepen understanding of and interest in the home region, nurture love for it, and work together to build a Tottori that residents can be confident in and proud of
