What Is Food Loss Reduction Day?

October 30th is "Food Loss Reduction Day" in Japan. It is set out in Article 9 of the Act on Promotion of Food Loss Reduction, which took effect on October 1st, 2019. The same article designates October as "Food Loss Reduction Month." The day aims to cut the amount of food that is thrown away even though it is still edible.

A Date from Matsumoto City's "30-10 Campaign"

The date is said to come from the "Leave Nothing Behind! 30-10 Campaign," a food loss initiative that started in Matsumoto, Nagano Prefecture.

  • Legal basis: Article 9 of the Act on Promotion of Food Loss Reduction (in force from October 1, 2019)
  • Food Loss Reduction Month: every October
  • Origin of the date: the "30-10 Campaign" that began in Matsumoto
  • What 30-10 means: stay in your seat and enjoy the food for the first 30 minutes and the last 10 minutes of a banquet

Know "30-10" Before Party Season

At banquets, people often get busy greeting others and chatting, leaving food uneaten. The 30-10 Campaign is a simple idea: focus on the food for the first 30 and last 10 minutes to reduce leftovers. With year-end and New Year party season approaching, it is an easy idea to adopt at work.
