November 27th is "Aichi Prefectural Citizens' Day" (Aichi Kenmin no Hi). It marks November 27, 1872 (Meiji 5), when the then Aichi Prefecture (renamed from Nagoya Prefecture) merged with Nukata Prefecture, fixing the boundaries of present-day Aichi. Aichi Prefecture established the day by ordinance in 2022, the 150th anniversary of the prefectural government.
Two Prefectures Became Today's Aichi
After the abolition of feudal domains in the early Meiji era, the area of present-day Aichi was divided between Aichi Prefecture (formerly Nagoya Prefecture), centered on Owari, and Nukata Prefecture, centered on Mikawa. Their merger created today's Aichi, combining Owari and Mikawa.
