International Tea Day
World ObservancesWhat Is International Tea Day?
May 21 is International Tea Day. It was established by the UN General Assembly in resolution 74/241, adopted on December 19, 2019. Recognizing the long history and the cultural and economic significance of tea around the world, as well as its significant role in rural development, poverty reduction, and food security in developing countries, the General Assembly proclaimed the day and called on the FAO (Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations) to lead the observance.
Tea Around the World in Numbers
The FAO shares a variety of facts about tea.
- More than 5,000 years of history: The origins of tea stretch back more than 5,000 years.
- Second only to water: Tea is the most consumed beverage in the world, after water.
- Supported by smallholders: Smallholders are responsible for 60% of world tea production.
- Livelihoods for over 13 million people: Tea is grown in very localized areas, yet it supports over 13 million people, including smallholder farmers and their households.
Consumption Keeps Growing
According to the FAO, per capita tea consumption worldwide has increased by 2.1% per year over the last decade. International Tea Day is an opportunity to celebrate the cultural heritage and economic importance of tea while working to make its production sustainable "from field to cup," so that its benefits for people, cultures, and the environment continue for generations.
