What Is "Tora-san" Day?

Every August 27th is "Tora-san Day" (「男はつらいよ」の日, "Otoko wa Tsurai yo" no Hi) in Japan. On August 27, 1969, the first film in the "Otoko wa Tsurai yo" (男はつらいよ, "It's Tough Being a Man") series was released in cinemas across Japan. The film, directed by Yoji Yamada and starring Kiyoshi Atsumi as the lovable drifter Torajiro "Tora-san" Kuruma, was the beginning of what would become the world's longest-running film series with a single actor in the lead role — 48 theatrical films released over 27 years (1969–1995), plus two more after Atsumi's death.

Who Is Tora-san?

Tora-san (寅さん) — real name Torajiro Kuruma — is a tekiya (的屋), a traveling street vendor who sells small goods at markets and festivals across Japan. He is cheerful, garrulous, impetuous, and kind-hearted; endlessly optimistic despite perpetual failure; romantically smitten with a new woman (the "Madonna") in nearly every film; and always returning, tail between his legs, to his family's tofu shop in the shitamachi (working-class downtown district) of Shibamata in Tokyo's Katsushika Ward. He is, in essence, a lovable loser — and one of the most beloved fictional characters in Japanese cinema history.

Why Tora-san Endures

The "Otoko wa Tsurai yo" series resonated deeply with Japanese audiences because Tora-san embodied something authentic and important: the dignity of the ordinary person struggling through life's difficulties with good humor and an open heart. In an era of rapid economic change and social disruption, Tora-san's connection to the old shitamachi values — community, warmth, directness, and pride in honest work — offered emotional grounding to audiences who feared losing these things. He is funny, touching, and ultimately hopeful.

Cultural Legacy

Shibamata, the Tokyo neighborhood where Tora-san's family home is set, has become a major tourist destination — complete with a life-size bronze statue of Tora-san outside Shibamata Station, the preserved Tora-san Museum, and the atmosphere of old downtown Tokyo that the films celebrated. Yoji Yamada's direction of all 48 original films established him as one of Japan's greatest filmmakers.
