What Is Airplane Day?

December 17th is "Airplane Day." It commemorates December 17, 1903, when the Wright brothers (Wilbur and Orville Wright), from Ohio, USA, achieved the world's first powered, manned flight with their aircraft "Flyer" at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina. The first flight covered only about 36 meters and lasted just 12 seconds, but that moment opened the age of human flight.

The Wright Brothers' Achievement

The Wright brothers ran a bicycle shop while teaching themselves about aviation. They designed and built the engine, propeller, and wing shapes themselves, succeeding only after extensive trial and error. On that single day they made four flights, the longest covering about 260 meters in 59 seconds.
