What Is the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women?

November 25 is the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women. On December 17, 1999, the UN General Assembly designated November 25 as this international day in resolution 54/134, inviting governments, international organizations, and NGOs to organize activities to raise public awareness of the issue on that date every year.

Why November 25?

According to the UN, women's rights activists have observed November 25 as a day against gender-based violence since 1981.

  • The Mirabal sisters: The date was selected to honor the Mirabal sisters, three political activists from the Dominican Republic who were murdered in 1960 by order of the country's ruler, Rafael Trujillo.
  • The 1993 Declaration: On December 20, 1993, the UN General Assembly adopted the Declaration on the Elimination of Violence against Women in resolution 48/104.
  • The 1999 resolution: According to the text of the resolution, on December 17, 1999, the UN General Assembly officially designated November 25 as an international day in resolution 54/134.

Japan's Campaign to Eliminate Violence against Women

In Japan, the Campaign to Eliminate Violence against Women is held every year, led by the Cabinet Office and other ministries and agencies. In fiscal 2026, it runs from November 12 to 25, so November 25 is its last day. During the campaign, awareness activities using posters and videos and purple light-ups around the country are held, and consultation services for domestic violence and sexual violence are promoted.
