What Is Mold Day?

Every November 25th is also "Mold Day" (金型の日, Kanagata no Hi) in Japan. The day was established in 1974 by the Japan Die and Mold Industry Association (日本金型工業会), which was founded on November 25, 1957, to promote awareness of the manufacturing die and mold industry (金型産業, kanagata sangyō) — the specialist sector that produces the precision tooling used to mass-produce virtually every manufactured product from automobile body panels to electronics casings, medical devices, and consumer goods.

What Is a Mold or Die?

A manufacturing mold or die (金型, kanagata) is a precision tool that shapes materials — typically metal, plastic, rubber, or ceramic — into specific forms through processes including injection molding, stamping, forging, casting, or pressing. Every injection-molded plastic component (from a smartphone case to a medical syringe), every stamped metal part (from an automobile door panel to a kitchen sink), and virtually every mass-produced consumer product's components were shaped using precision molds and dies made by specialist toolmakers.

Where the Word "Kanagata" Comes From

In casting, molds made of sand were called sunagata (sand molds) and those made of metal kanagata (metal molds), which is said to be the origin of the word. Car bodies are formed from sheet metal with press dies, and plastic products such as telephones are made with injection molds. Because the quality of the mold decides the quality of the product, molds are sometimes called the "parents" of products.
