What Is Mold Day?

Every November 25th is also "Mold Day" (金型の日, Kanagata no Hi) in Japan. The date derives from wordplay: "ii (11) kata (25→ "ka ta")" — "ii" meaning "good" and "kata" meaning "mold" or "die." The day was established by the Japan Die and Mold Industry Association (日本金型工業会) to promote awareness of the manufacturing die and mold industry (金型産業, kanagata sangyō) — the specialist sector that produces the precision tooling used to mass-produce virtually every manufactured product from automobile body panels to electronics casings, medical devices, and consumer goods.

A manufacturing mold or die (金型, kanagata) is a precision tool that shapes materials — typically metal, plastic, rubber, or ceramic — into specific forms through processes including injection molding, stamping, forging, casting, or pressing.
