August 8th is "Children's Association Day" in Japan. The date was chosen by the National Federation of Children's Associations of Japan (Zenkoku Kodomo-kai Rengokai), a public interest incorporated association, because adding the dates of Hinamatsuri (March 3rd) and the Boys' Festival (May 5th) together comes to August 8th.
A Culture of Communities Watching Over Children's Growth
A children's association (kodomo-kai) is a group organized in a small local area, where children of different ages gather for activities under the guidance of parents and volunteers. Many are called "XX Kodomo-kai," but some go by names such as "XX Club" or "XX Shonendan" (youth group).
